dermen on January 6, 19^7, be referred to the Board <strong>of</strong> Aldermen for the year<br />

President Hall and Alderman Brady <strong>of</strong>fered the following order,<br />

Ordered:<br />

The Commissioner <strong>of</strong> Electric Lines and Lights<br />

is hereby requested to arrange with The Boston Edison company for the in-<br />

stallation <strong>of</strong> such additional street lights on Washington Street from Union<br />

Square to Beacon Street so that this highly active thoroughfare will be ade-<br />

quately and completely lighted thereby eliminating or reducing accidents to<br />

Alderman Brady <strong>of</strong>fered the following resolution,<br />

Whereas:<br />

Towns O.f the Commonwealth, including Justifiable increases in wages, will<br />

caus'e unprecedented Jumps in the_ tax rates <strong>of</strong> almost every <strong>City</strong> and Town in<br />

the State," placing an unfair "burden on'real estate and the home owner, and<br />

Whereas:<br />

The State <strong>of</strong> Massachusetts has each year_placed<br />

a "State Tax" so-called on every <strong>City</strong> and Town in the' Common wealth "to make up<br />

app ro ximat ely ^10,OOP,000. deficit in t he operat ing costs <strong>of</strong>the State Government.<br />

Joeing the only "one <strong>of</strong> 'the, fo'rty-eight States which resorts to such an<br />

unjustifiable levy, be it<br />

Resolved;<br />

That the Board <strong>of</strong> Aldermen <strong>of</strong> t he <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Somerville</strong><br />

in session duly ^called, go on record as strongly protesting the continuance<br />

<strong>of</strong> the State Tax on Cities and Towns and-urging the newly elected<br />

Governor and Legislature'to eliminate the same and to have the State <strong>of</strong> Massachusetts<br />

balance Its own budget, and that copies <strong>of</strong> these resolutions be sent<br />

to Governor Bradford, the president <strong>of</strong> the senate and the Speaker <strong>of</strong> the House<br />

<strong>of</strong> Representatives.<br />
