W. Francis Collins <strong>of</strong> Soraervllle and eleven others not residents <strong>of</strong> Somervllle<br />

under the name <strong>of</strong> U. S. Coast Guard Veterans' Association for the purpose <strong>of</strong><br />

the following:<br />

The purposes <strong>of</strong> this organization shall be to endeavor to uphold<br />

the Constitution <strong>of</strong> the United states <strong>of</strong> America, assisting in the common<br />

defense against any and all enemies both within and without its boundaries;<br />

to assist in maintaining the honor <strong>of</strong> the American flag and to endeavor to in-T<br />

culcate the ideals for which it stands; to preserve and strengthen the comradeships<br />

formed during our service in this great war; to dedicate our Individual<br />

and collective efforts toward a -mutual helfulness and harmonious fellowship;<br />

to assist in promoting justice, peace, and good will among all men<br />

regardless <strong>of</strong> race or creed, believing this to be essential to the purposes <strong>of</strong><br />

God, principles <strong>of</strong> democracy and protection <strong>of</strong> our freedoms; to unite fraternally<br />

through organization, those men who served honorably in the armed force*<br />

with the Coast Guard during World War 1 -and 11; to foster <strong>of</strong>ficial and honorable<br />

recognition for the services as performed and to perpetuate the memories<br />

and incidents <strong>of</strong> our association during-World War 1 and 11; to honor our-dead<br />

members and to preserve their graves from neglect and oblivion; to endeavor<br />

to alleviate the incapacities <strong>of</strong> our disabled and unfortunate members by<br />

charitable and benevolent attendance to their welfare; to promote and encourage<br />

social, patriotic, and historic activities, and in connection therewith<br />

to foster and participate in social, historic, athletic, patriotic, Intellectual<br />

and musical entertainments; to acquire, purchase, erect, hold, Improve,<br />

lease and maintain real and personal property as may be necessary and appropriate<br />

for the carrying out <strong>of</strong> these purposes; and to do all other things Incidental<br />

thereto; '<br />

to be located in the city <strong>of</strong> Maiden, Mass., said application being accompanied<br />

by a report from the Chief <strong>of</strong> Police stating that upon investigation he fails<br />

to find any record <strong>of</strong> the above mentioned person ever having been engaged In<br />

the illegal selling <strong>of</strong> intoxicating liquors or in the keeping <strong>of</strong> places or<br />

tenements for the purpose <strong>of</strong> Illegal gaming or in any other business prohibited<br />

by law and that he is a person <strong>of</strong> good repute.<br />

Placed on file and certificate to be signed by his honor the<br />

jMayor and the Board <strong>of</strong> Aldermen and forwarded to the Secretary <strong>of</strong> the Common-<br />

wealth .<br />
