ANA MARÍA MATUTE
Olvidado Rey Gudú
– Soldado, abandona todas tus farsas y mentiras. No solamente
– Yo no soy tu hija –rehuyó, casi gritó–. Yo soy la hija de un
viejo soldado que murió a tus órdenes. Yo no puedo ser tu hija,
porque te amo.
El Rey sonrió.
– ¿Qué es eso de que me amas? El amor es una de las grandes
mentiras de este mundo.../
Forgotten King Gudú
/... Alone with Gudrilkja, Gudú looked at her from top to toe. He
already knew that she wasn’t a man. She was a woman, and
he even knew much more: she was his daughter. He had not
known any of them before her, and you could say that he hadn’t
known any of his sons either when they were children, as he
only got to deal with Gudulín, and that briefly. Besides, Gudulín
was for him only like the new growth of a tree, that he expected
to see thrive. That new growth had died early. But, a woman?
A woman, besides, with a soul, courage and the makings of a
soldier... A new confusion was added to the latest confusions
that lately seemed to overpower him. And so, looking at her
standing before him, tall, slim, muscular, with those huge eyes
which –now he realized– seemed the mirror of his own, he said:
– Soldier, drop all your pretences and lies. Not only do I know
that you are a woman, but also that you are my daughter.
She was then the one surprised. His daughter? How was that
possible? No one had ever told her so.
– I am not your daughter –she denied, almost shouting–. I am
the daughter of an old soldier who died at your orders. I cannot
be your daughter because I love you.
The King smiled.
– What is this about your loving me? Love is one of the greatest
lies in this world.../
