France’s CMA CGM plans to launch six 18,000 TEU vessels on the Transpacific route in May.
All this at a time of change in the industry triggered
by an “outburst” of merger activity that’s set
to reshape the carrier alliances that dominate portto-port
container flows.
The merger of Cosco and China Shipping and
CMA CGM’s pending takeover of Singapore’s Neptune
Orient Lines and its container subsidiary APL
following on the Hapag-Lloyd-CSAV get together
which notched up its first full year in 2015, have
re-ignited the industry’s long-stalled consolidation.
And there could be more deals in the offing, with a
marriage between Hyundai Merchant Marine and
Hanjin Shipping looking like the only way to keep
afloat the financially troubled and heavily indebted
Korean carriers.
The mergers will lead to a shakeup of alliances
as Cosco is a member of the CKYHE grouping,
China Shipping partners CMA CGM in Ocean Three
and APL is one of the G6 carriers. The only near
certainty is the 2M alliance of the world’s largest
