Petro-Nav President Jacques Beauchamp says shipping movements adjusting well to pipeline schedule. Leo Ryan Following the National Energy Board final approval of the reversal of Enbridge’s 9B pipeline, the joint venture between Groupe Desgagnés and U.S. energy giant Valero, Transport Maritime Saint-Laurent, recently launched a shuttle service transporting Alberta light crude oil between Valero’s terminal in Montreal to its Jean Gaulin refinery in Lévis, Québec. “We are delighted by the success of a unique service that shows what shortsea shipping can do,” said Jacques Beauchamp, President of Petro-Nav, wholly-owned subsidiary of Groupe Desgagnés. “Imagine how huge such volumes would be if transported by rail.” The first shipment of some 326,000 barrels of oil by the Panamax tanker Espada Desgagnés, flying the Canadian flag, took place on December 12. It was followed by that of the Laurentia Desgagnés, which began operating under Canadian flag in January. “Everything is going very smoothly, and we are adjusting shipments according to the pipeline schedule,” said Mr. Beauchamp. Both Panamax tankers are Ice Class 1A ships and are well suited to the St. Lawrence trades 12 months a year, he pointed out. They are equipped with double hulls as well as with bow thrusters and a modified steering system, giving them greater maneuverability at low speeds. About 130 annual trips are planned on the shuttle service. The two vessels will account for about 50% of the Lévis refinery’s oil supplies. In another recent development, Louis-Marie Beaulieu, Chairman and CEO of Groupe Desgagnés inc., announced a contract with a Turkish shipyard for the construction of two chemical tankers, with an option for two other identical ships. This comes on the heels of a previous order from the same yard for one asphalt tanker and one chemical tanker. 40 Maritime Magazine 80
