canadien.
shipments included power plant components, industrial
boilers, construction machinery and vehicles, steel
cables and pipes. CEO Bruce Wood said, “The port is a
key transit point for machinery and plant components
related to Ontario’s manufacturing and infrastructure
sectors.”
The Port of Oshawa assisted several companies in
moving project cargo over the past year including generators
and plastic tanks destined for Newfoundland as
well as a kiln unit that arrived in Picton. The new $4.1
million rail spur has opened up a whole new market for
the Port. The track includes an oversized dimensional
move section to accommodate cargo too large to move
by road.
“This allows the Port of Oshawa to move into
the niche project cargo market,” said Donna Taylor,
President & CEO, Oshawa Port Authority. “It is now
equipped to move cargo of all sizes year round and that’s
a huge advantage.”
Busy times for McKeil Marine
For McKeil Marine, which is marking its 60th anniversary
this year, these are busy times. The marine
service provider moved three large tanks from Sarnia
to Thunder Bay in 2015 for T Lane, an Alberta heavy
haul company. For Mammoet, it transported a generator
and turbine to the Transcanada Napanee Generating
Station in Ontario, a large reactor from Sarnia to
Duluth, two shipments from Montreal to Bath, ON with
each barge loaded with a 293 mt turbine and a 257 mt
generator. In addition, support services were provided
for 34 oversized pieces from a heavy lift ship anchored
in Bath.
For K & N, McKeil transported six large kiln sections
from Montreal to Port-Daniel-Gascons in Quebec,
a 250 mt transformer from Varennes to Chisasibi on the
eastern shore of James Bay for Watson, a 175,000 lbs
