a Corfù.
market and to expand simultaneously the offer of its services in the lines
of the North with 4 big ships.
THE NEW STEP
On the 11 th of April 2012 the Italian company placed another bet. In a
time of intense economic recession Grimaldi Lines dares to invest with
an almost new ship in a traditional line, pressing even more the Greek
element in the area. The goal of the Neapolitan Group is the further
reinforcement of Brindisi with younger ships and the revival of the
development in one of the most important ports of Southern Italy. The
port of Brindisi is not a random choice since for many decades now it
constitutes a benchmark for the commerce between Greece and Italy. But
at the same time it is one of the most important commercial and industrial
units of the Adriatic through which large quantities of fuel, natural gas
and chemicals are transported.
THE RO/PAX SORRENTO
The launch of a rather young ship in this line, and especially in such
hard economic times, obviously consists of a great challenge for the
Italian company which promises that will provide upgraded and low cost
services for passengers and professionals. But what do we know about
this ship which aspires to dominate in Brindisi?
The Ro/Pax SORRENTO may not be the ideal example of a charming
ship but it belongs to a successful type of ship combining significant
comparative advantages since it can comfortably carry passengers, a
large number of vehicles and –most importantly- with higher speed and
at a lower cost. The Italian beast of 26.000 gross tonnes was built by
the C.N. Visentini & Donada shipyard in January 2003 and constitutes
the fourth in a row from a 20 vessel fleet built so it can contribute to the
modernization of maritime transport in the Mediterranean.
The ship was delivered to the Group in June 16 th 2003 and from April 11 th
2012 she is deployed in the Patras-Igoumenitsa-Brindisi line performing
three weekly departures from Greece and Italy respectively. It should also
be noted that during the summer season two calls per week at Corfu port
are made.
