linee sinuose, prodotte dalle correnti. Ero come ipnotizzato
cerimonia, in compagnia dell’allora sindaco Gino Cesaroni:
brutale purezza ricordavano Van Gogh.
dissolversi calpestati dai fedeli.
Ritornammo a Roma nella notte. E fu un ritorno silenzioso.
in the restaurant and exclaimed: “Forget about the police! I’d
have clubbed him over the head with my stick and knocked him
out!”
Before leaving, we lingered to have a look at the stately Palazzo
Ruspoli dating from the Renaissance and had a stroll in the
adjoining garden next to the lake: the water had turned purple
with silver ripples produced by the current. I was mesmerised
by the glint of the sun and the slight swell on the surface of the
lake, and was reluctant to walk away. Less than an hour later
we were in Genzano. I had seen the Infiorata festival many
years before, from a balcony at the Town Hall overlooking Via
Belardi, which scales the hill from Piazza IV Novembre to the
church of Santa Maria della Cima, where the actual ceremony
takes place. That time I was with the then Mayor Gino Cesaroni,
who explained to me that the day before Corpus Christi,
the street is carpeted with 50 tonnes of flowers that are colour
coded based on chalk markings made on the road. Now, however,
perhaps because I was tired or because of the blinding
light of the setting sun, everything seemed different: I couldn’t
make out the different patterns, merely a blur of vivid colours
whose stark purity reminded me of Van Gogh. And there was
a faint sickly sweet scent in the air, the intense aroma of flowers
as they begin to wilt. Shortly after our arrival, the floral carpet
was crossed by the religious procession preceded by the Bishop
of Albano carrying the Blessed Sacrament. This only made
the fragrance all the stronger while the colours of the petals
seemed to dissolve under the feet of the faithful.
We returned to Rome late that night and neither of us broke
the silence.
