Materializzandosi all’improvviso da un angolo in ombra sul fondo del locale, un vecchio prete, dall’aspetto fragile e minuto, si fece avanti esclamando: “Altro che after being immersed in endless blue during the voyage, now I was engulfed by greenery on all sides. I had forgotten just how lush the forests in this part of Italy were: the dark green of the oak trees stood out clearly from the lighter shades of the chestnut, maple and lime trees, while the various shades of the crop fields seemed to blur into one. The hills were covered in vineyards that had brownish hues in the sunlight. At Marino, we stopped to visit the Basilica of San Barnaba with its delicate straw-coloured 17th century façade, which is at the same time large, unadorned and attractive. The colour scheme is similar at the nearby Palazzo Colonna, which was built around the same time and is now the Town Hall. I was beginning to feel peckish but my friend insisted on driving on. He took the Via dei Laghi and we were once again overwhelmed by the magic of the woods, with breathtaking views of the lakes on one side and villages nestling in the hills on the other. At Nemi we decided to stop for lunch in a trattoria – if I remember correctly it was called Lo Specchio di Diana. I can still taste the delicate pork roast cooked to perfection and smell the fragrance of those strawberries, which were as good as any I’d tasted in years. At the next table there was a party of Americans who had had too much beer, and when they got the bill one of them, who was drunker than the others, started yelling that they had been ripped off. He smashed a bottle followed by a couple of glasses. The waiters tried to calm him down and explain that they had been charged according to the menu but the management were eventually forced to call the police. Suddenly, a frail old priest materialised from a dark corner
