Eventionboard
of Monday 29 th in the heart of Barcelona, Plaza
Catalunya, after a day out in the city. At about 5
pm the square began to fill up with Samarcanda
entertainers emerging from La Rambla, from Paseig
de Gracia and from shops and bars facing onto the
large esplanade. More observant onlookers may have
realised what was about to happen because they
would have caught glimpses of bright fuchsia under
the sweaters and jackets of all these people arriving
from nowhere – that being the colour of this season’s
official uniform for Samarcanda entertainment staff.
At 5.30 pm a drum appeared from who knows where
and played the first notes of the Samarcanda theme tune,
whereupon all 700 participants displayed their fuchsia
T-shirts and started dancing, thus giving rise to one of
the biggest flash mobs that Barcelona has ever seen.
Countless video cameras, digital cameras and mobile
phones filmed the happening from every angle,
the square filled with curious bystanders and many
people also looked on from the upper floors of the
buildings around the square as the 700 fuchsia flashmobbers
did their thing, singing and dancing in
one great blur of colour in motion.
As is the case with every self-respecting flash mob, the
last dance step coincided with a mad dash to evacuate
the square and avoid fines from police though, in fact,
the local officers merely looked on without intervening.
After a day full of Gaudì and tapas, we were all pleased
to be back on board.
The return voyage was once again a succession of
excitement, parties, celebration and fun, the highlights
being the “counter-talent” karaoke staged by guests, the
finals of all the competitions and the awards ceremony.
When we got back to Civitavecchia, it seemed to
everyone that the time had simply flown, and we
wanted to linger a little longer. This explains the
endless hugs and goodbyes on the quay, at the bus
stop, and at the entrance to the terminal. There
had been similar scenes when we first met up prior
to departure – the difference this time was the
slight feeling of sadness (a few tears were shed).
But nothing can erase from the memory the intense
experience of the mini-cruise. Nothing can erase the
dozens, or rather hundreds, of photos and videos
that began to appear all over Facebook, Twitter and
YouTube literally just seconds after we’d disembarked.
Images, anecdotes and smiles that will bear
testimony forever to the thrills and excitement
of an extraordinary event: SamCruise 2012.
