lasciarsi sfuggire una visita al Museo del Bardo, dislocato in diver-
si edifici situati alla periferia della città, dove si trova, tra l'altro,
la più ricca collezione esistente di mosaici romani, e una al Museo
di Cartagine, un sito archeologico situato sulle alture di Byrsa che
custodisce importanti collezioni d'epoca romana.
Hammamet, relax mentale e fisico. Proseguendo poi verso
Sud, troviamo Hammamet. In questa località sgorgano acque dalle
proprietà curative e che aiutano a recuperare energie. Situata in
un meraviglioso contesto naturale, con un mare cristallino davanti
e circondata per il resto dal verde, è il luogo ideale per rilassarsi.
All'interno della città vecchia sono bellissime le mura, che risalgono
al 1500; qui, inoltre, ci sono sempre mercatini folkloristici. Tra
spiagge vergini e baie incantevoli, poi, gli amanti del mare hanno
soltanto l'imbarazzo della scelta quando devono decidere dove
trascorrere una giornata all'insegna del rilassamento. Alla sera,
infine, ci si può divertire assistendo a spettacoli di teatro e musica
davvero coinvolgenti.
Oasi e terme romane a Gafsa. Lasciata Hammamet e le sue
spiagge, si prosegue alla volta di Gafsa, compresa tra le montagne
e il deserto del Sahara. Conosciuta fin dai tempi dei Romani,
conserva numerose testimonianze storiche. Tra tutte, le terme,
tutt'ora in funzione, con le Piscines Romaines, sorgenti termali che
i Romani hanno ricavato con un complesso sistema idraulico, tra
i più importanti di tutta la Tunisia. Le vasche, la cui profondità
arriva a toccare i 5 metri, sono conservate perfettamente e contengono
acque che sgorgano a circa 30 gradi, temperatura ideale per
immergersi in una condizione di relax assoluto. Meritano poi una
visita anche le zone attigue, come il Dar Loungo, casa tradizionale
da cui si schiude una vista meravigliosa su tutto il centro storico.
Poi, la Kasbah e, a sud della città, una grande oasi dove fioriscono
tantissime palme.
Tra dune e villaggi di Berberi. La tappa successiva è Tozeur,
ai confini della grande distesa bianca di cristalli di sale del Chott
marenostrum
striking contrast. The Aghlabid mosque is undoubtedly
the most impressive and important of those that are
open to the public. A good place to relax for a while is
the Belvedere, Tunis’s one real park where you can also
see the splendid Kouba cupola. History buffs won’t want
to miss the chance to see the Bardo Museum, housed
in several buildings at the edge of town, which has one
of the world’s finest collections of ancient art, notably
the renowned Roman mosaics. They will also make a
beeline for the Museum of Carthage, an archaeological
site located on Byrsa Hill, where the extensive collection
of sculptures and household items paints a portrait
of Roman Carthage in its heyday.
Chill out and soothe your senses in Hammamet.
Heading south, we come to Hammamet. Here there is
revitalising spring water with healing properties. Located
in a beautiful natural setting, with crystal clear sea on
one side and a dense forest of greenery on the other, it
is the ideal place to relax. The old city walls are a beautiful
sight and date back to 1500; another attraction is
the traditional local markets. With pristine beaches and
superb bays, anyone who wants to spend a day of sun,
sea and relaxation will be spoiled for choice. There’s
also plenty of nightlife with quality theatre and live music
performances.
Oasis and Roman pools at Gafsa. Our next stop
is Gafsa, with the mountains and Sahara Desert lurking
in the background. Dating back to ancient Roman
times, it has retained many of its original features. The
town’s focal monument is the Piscines Romaines; the
2 nd century waterworks are still operating today and
are among the most important of their kind in Tunisia.
The beautifully preserved rectangular pools are up
to 5 metres deep. Hot springs bubble up through
the bottom of them at a temperature of about 30°C,
making it ideal for bathing. Also worth a visit are the
neighbouring areas, such as the Dar Loungo, a tradi-
