una Colonna del Dompianè. Al XIV secolo
risalgono quattro chiese di cui tuttora rimane
quella della Purificazione. Il numero dei
monasteri crebbe fino a raggiungere, secondo
le testimonianze dei viaggiatori, il numero di
24 mentre una stampa del 1882 ne mostra
16 di cui soltanto sei si conservano ancora
oggi, tra cui quelli della Trasfigurazione o di
Barlaam, di S. Stefano, della S.Trinità, di San
Nicola, la Gran Meteora e di Santa Barbara,
il più antico dei quali risale al 1366. Lo stile
dei monasteri ricalca quello dell’Oriente ellenico,
se si eccettua la mancanza della cinta
turrita non necessaria perché i monasteri non
erano accessibili se non per mezzo di scale e
di corde. Ora, invece, l’ascesa è facilitata da
scale scavate nella roccia e, addirittura, da
un’incredibile teleferica, un tocco di modernità
che, nei colori, si integra comunque con
questo insediamento mozzafiato, importante
centro della Chiesa Ortodossa (dopo il Monte
Athos), dichiarato dall’Unesco Patrimonio
dell’Umanità che continua a richiamare e stupire
visitatori di tutto il mondo.

consisted of several monasteries centred around
the Church of the Dormition of Theotokos. Four
churches were erected in the 14th century, one
of which – the Purification – is still standing.
According to the records, the number of monasteries
eventually reached 24, while a print
from 1882 shows 16. Only six are still intact: the
Transfiguration or Varlaam, St. Stephen, the Holy
Trinity, St. Nicholas, Great Meteoron and St.
Barbara, the oldest of which dates back to 1366.
The style mirrors that of the monasteries of the
Eastern Greek Empire, except for the absence of
the turreted walls, which were not required due
to the fact that here access was only possible by
means of ladders and ropes. These days access
to the monasteries is by steps cut into the rocks
and by an amazing cable car; the latter adds a
touch of modernity, though its colour has been
chosen to blend into the breathtaking setting.
The location is both an important centre of worship
for the Eastern Orthodox Church (second
only to Mount Athos) and a UNESCO World
Heritage Site that attracts and stuns visitors
from all over the world.
