MARMARA VE BOLU DEPREMLERİ SONRASINDA TÜRK TABİPLERİ BİRLİĞİ FAALİYETLERİ
66
The German Team indicated that they needed more doctors and with long shift periods. The
emergency operations are on the increase, therefore Turkish bilingual medical specialists need to be
hired and at least two months of utilisation would be necessary.
MoH has expressed that there were 3 practitioners already in place.
The Japanese Team indicated that they needed Turkish specialists especially orthopedicians,
cardiologists, paediatricians. They are negotiating for a prefab hospital in Kocaeli.
MoH responded by asking to have the number of patients and the number of doctors required.
Turkish Red Crescent camp manager in Uzunçiftlik has not shown interest in the co-ordination of
medical facilities. Teherefore it was decided for the co-ordination on be done directly by the ccrisis
centre of MoH after all the data has been furnished.
The Norwegian Red Cross stated that Kocaeli area has plenty of bilingual doctors especially in the
University Hospital.
MoH explained that SSK, University hospitals and MoH doctors were part of different systems and
could not move laterally. The also stated that the rotation periods would be increased to 15 days from
3-6 days. They said that the German Hospital would also have one permanent co-ordinator like Adapazarı.
4-Disaster Health Training for Medical Students
It was suggested to organise health training conferences for 500 medical students of Kocaeli
University. Training will include emergency situations, disaster mental health, Red Cross movement,
general training and field visits to field hospitals and wat-san projects will be included. Training material
and books are needed for education. Meetings with university will be arranged for further discussions.
5-Water sanitation issues
Golcuk water problem has been solved. Visiting each camp proves to be difficult due to the high
number of camps.4-5 camps are served by the city but the chlorination of the water is high.
Austrian sanitation experts will work in Adapazari and generally co-operate with UNICEF. It was
also decided that DSI(turkish Water Works) should be informed and be involved in the process.
It was decided that the detailed sanitation/water meetings need to be set up separately, bu tin
co-operation with the health department.
6-Other issues
-MoH needs information and data from the hospitals about their operations and needs to provide
asisstance.
-Representative from Kizilay – Turkish Red Crescent is needed for the next meeting.
-Professional camp management, higher level of co-ordinations of the camps as enough material
and manpower is already available for them. Camp Management Programs could be organised and
well operated camps should be used as an example, i.e. in Adapazarı.
7-Closing of the meeting
Next meeting will be held in Izmit on the 16th of September, 1999.
