Determination of Horizontal Distance in a Stand by a Vertical Angle Method<br />

Summary<br />

A new method is described for measuring distances in a stand. It is based on<br />

measuring the vertical deflection of sighting to a desired point and deflection of<br />

the terrain, with known height of a transitman. Data on the value of each individual<br />

deflection of the terrain can be substituted by data on the value of the<br />

horizontal deflection from the direction of the greatest incline, if it is known.<br />

Investigation of the method's applicability revealed a series of practical problems<br />

connected primarily with extreme vulnerability to errors, which work with the<br />

existing instruments is necessarily burdened.<br />

The application of this method for determination of surfaces and borderlines<br />

of sample plots implies a reverse procedure — determination of a desired distance<br />

in the field by sighting under the corresponding vertical angle. This procedure is<br />

not burrdened by the problems formerly mentioned.<br />
