discussion of city life. Furthermore, there’s an atmospheric dispute between the historic
surroundings and Bryghusprojektet. Whether the historic elements are important to a city’s
development seems to be a matter of opinion, but as a compromise the building of
Bryghusprojektet is now planned to be moved five meters closer to the port. That way the
historical view of Frederiksholms Kanal is maintained and it provides more justice to the
historical surroundings due to the extended space around them.
Finally this thesis involves a discussion of the role of the subject and how this is
approached in an atmospheric discourse. It is the subject as a consumer versus the subject as a
citizen that is debated. Marketing, branding and consumption are increasing rather heavily in
the public space today, which affects the atmospheric discourse of the city and the citizen’s
democratic, social and creative conditions. This is an unavoidable aspect, but it would be
advantageous to try to reach a balance between these approaches.
Conclusively, the atmospheric discourse is important in the planning of public city
space, and it is of utmost import to focus on atmospheric elements and the conditions of the
citizen in future city planning projects.
