tend to use his/her hands to break the fall and avoid impact. However this carries a considerably
higher risk of serious wrist injury.
4.7 Conclusions and recommendations
As yet comparatively little attention is paid to wearing a helmet. One of the main reasons for not
wearing is given as „not having considered it”. The quota of snowboarders wearing wrist protection
is still also very low, particularly amongst beginners. As with helmet wearing, reasons bearing
weight here are ignorance of the protective effect and a misconception of the features of the respective
protective article. It is therefore a matter of major importance to make snow sportsmen and
women aware of protective options. It can be assumed the bfu information and awareness campaign
„Enjoy sport – protect yourself“ will motivate more people to wear a helmet or wrist protection.
Within the framework of this campaign, more skiers and snowboarders will have an on-piste
opportunity to test a helmet. At the moment there are no plans for a similar campaign on testing
gloves fitted with a stabilizing element because as yet there is no optimum product on the market
that can be actively promoted.
A significant increase in the wearing of other protective articles can be achieved by means of suitable
measures aimed at the respective groups. Snowboarding beginners should wear knee protection.
These people are best reached through instructors and so work will be carried out with snowsport
schools. Expert skiers and snowboarders should protect their backs as well as other parts of
their body. Persons directly involved or related are trainers, sport instructors and experts. The topic
of individual protective equipment should be incorporated into their training without delay. Hip and
coccyx protection is advisable for older people who actively engage in snow sport. However because
of resources, this protective option will not be actively communicated at present.
