Was also tun? Ausschalten? Aufklären? Mahnen?
Using a rather rhetorical than digital trick, Wolfie Christl takes the audience down from
the heights of ethical debates to the depths of individual, everyday use of data: “Outside the
entrance, I installed a camera that matches your faces with your online profiles.” Christl
describes how companies use personal data from mobile phones, apps and platforms to create
profiles, which they use to send you promotional advertising or to determine tariffs for
example for health services, loans and insurances. Likewise, metadata, which are the tracks
we leave on the internet, provide information about personal characteristics without actually
having to evaluate detailed contents. Behavioural forecasting helps to further analyse and
stereotype the users. However, due to the number of analysed data, personality profiles tend
to be rather one-dimensional as they depend on the individual interests of the respective data
analysts. So what are we supposed to do now? Switch off our devices? Educate and inform?
Warn? Christl explains his strategies for the everyday use of data: Inform people and make
them sit up and think – be it with the help of serious games or a study on data tracking, which
he has presented to the European Parliament.
Angela Richter, on the other hand, broaches the issue of data protection and privacy on the
theatre stage. She develops productions based on interviews with Edward Snowden and Julian
Assange, activists and secret services and NGO insiders. She uses the data of unsuspecting
audience members for the concept and design of her plays. Richter combines the
