Diskussion:
geplant.
This study was untertaken to determine the relative frequencies of odontogenic tumours as
classified according to the WHO Classification 2005. The tumours presented in a rural and peri-
urban patient population sample treated at the Medunsa Oral Health Centre between 1980 and
June 2006. In an archive of 21.410 surgical biopsies, a total of 741 odontogenic tumours were
diagnosed. Ameloblastomas were most frequently encountered (n= 324, 43.7%) followed by
keratocystic odontogenic tumour (n=170, 22.9%), odontogenic yxoma (n=52, 7%), odontoma
(n=37, 4.9%), adenomatoid odontogenic tumour (n= 33, 44.4%), odontogenic fibroma (n=29,
3.9%), odontogenic malignancies (n=24, 3.2%), calcifying cystic odontogenic tumour (n=21,
2.8%), cementoblastoma (n=16, 2.1%), calcifying epihelial odontogenic tumour (n=11, 1.5%),
ameloblastic fibroma (n=10, 1.3%), and ameloblastic fibroodontoma (n=9, 1.2%). Other tumour
types accountered for less than 1% of the sample. Ameloblastomas affected both genders
equally, keratocystic odontogenic tumours occured significantly more in males and the majority
of adenomatoid odontogenic tumours presented in young females. Of the odontogenic malig-
nancies, 23 were carcinomas and only one a carcinosarcoma.
Two keratocystic odontogenic tumours showed malignant change and a further 3 epithelial
dysplasia. Although this is the first study of this kind to be based on the 2005 WHO Classifica-
tion, our study differs from others in the relative high frequency rates of ameloblastomas and
odontogenic malignancies and the paucity of odontomas.
