From practical experience, how easily and
effectively can Hep C be treated nowadays?
Almost all patients can be treated successfully
with the currently available HCV therapies.
If the adherence is right and people take the
medication regularly as agreed, the possibility
of the therapy failing is next to zero. Even if
the first therapy is unsuccessful, Vosevi® (Sofosbuvir
/ Velpatasvir / Voxilaprevir) is a rescue
therapy with which these patients can also be
successfully treated.
What are the remaining problems?
Testing should be extended. Since last year,
rapid tests can also be carried out without
the presence of a doctor, which gives the
possibility of low-threshold testing. Even if
there are no signs of acute HCV, this option
now exists after the current guidelines have
been amended.
If active hepatitis C has been detected, therapy
should be started as soon as possible – also
to protect third parties.
What tips do you have for M*SM* regarding
sexual health?
Most of the infections and re-infections that
we see are not directly related to risky sexual
practices but rather to intravenous or nasal
drug use. Therefore, the education regarding
safer use should be expanded. (ts,mb)
