4. Public <strong>Transport</strong><br />
The prioritisation of public transport over the private motorist<br />
highlights the need for certain roads projects to provide<br />
additional capacity for public transport or enable some form of<br />
priority movement of public transport.<br />
5. Capacity<br />
Within the context of managing demand for road space through<br />
various strategies including promoting public over private<br />
transport, there is need for a number of road projects to address<br />
current and pending capacity issues that negatively impact on<br />
the effective and efficient functioning of the City.<br />
6. Project Packages<br />
Identifies road infrastructure requirements in support of other<br />
initiatives including key city projects, such as the new airport<br />
and associated trade-port.<br />
6.2 Roads Policy<br />
The following focuses on two key aspects of road policy which relate to<br />
provincial and national roads in the eThekwini Municipality. At this stage<br />
there is no need for additional policy on roads<br />
6.2.1 Toll Roads<br />
The planned introduction of additional toll points on national roads within<br />
the Municipal Area is an issue for the eThekwini Council.<br />
Currently there are two tolls in the eThekwini<br />
Municipal area, one at Mariannhill on the N3 and<br />
the other at Tongaat on the N2.<br />
Two additional toll points are being considered,<br />
namely in the south at Prospecton on the N2 and<br />
to the west at Key Ridge on the N3.<br />
