7. ROAD SAFETY<br />
7.1 Introduction<br />
Road safety is a cornerstone of the <strong>Integrated</strong> <strong>Transport</strong> <strong>Plan</strong> as it has a<br />
dramatic impact on the potential Quality of Life for many residents, both<br />
young and old.<br />
Apart from the social impact on individuals and families, road accidents<br />
have a major impact on the economy of the county. In spite of various<br />
initiatives including road safety programmes such as Asiphephe and Arrive<br />
Alive, road fatalities continue to increase throughout the country as shown<br />
in the following graph.<br />

Accident Trend in KZN and South Africa<br />
During 2001, 51% of traffic accidents in South Africa occurred in the eight<br />
largest urban areas including eThekwini where fatal accidents and serious<br />
injuries also indicated an upward trend. The figures shown in the following<br />
table over a ten year period show 6 400 deaths, 1 200 of these being<br />
children. In addition there were 30 000 serious injuries costing eThekwini<br />
some R14 billion.<br />
