7.5.2 Strategic Thrust 2: Road Safety Management Areas<br />
The most vulnerable groups in eThekwini have been identified as follows:-<br />
� Pedestrians of school going age<br />
� Pedestrians in the 20-30 age group in the <strong>Durban</strong> CBD<br />
The worst areas within the municipality are now identified as road safety<br />
management areas with a view towards specifically managing reduction of<br />
the incidence and severity of accident occurrence in these most vulnerable<br />
groups.<br />
7.5.2.1 Pedestrians in the 5-9 and 10-19 Age Categories<br />
The Road Safety Management Areas in respect of these groups are:<br />
� Umlazi<br />
� Kwamashu<br />
� Phoenix<br />
� Chatsworth<br />
The Road Safety Management strategies<br />
for each sector in respect of these age<br />

Education:<br />
Strategy 1: Teach young pedestrians basic road safety and instill<br />
sound habits at an early age<br />
Strategy 2: Use the power of peer pressure<br />
Publicity - Raising Awareness:<br />
Strategy 3: Involve parents, high profile persons and business<br />
Strategy 4: Make unsafe road user behaviour “uncool”<br />
Community Liaison:<br />
Strategy 5: Involve community in the safety of their children and<br />
