avoid the enemies of <strong>All</strong>ah. In fact this is the very sincerest faith.[222] After that he<br />

mentioned a tradition had been said by the Prophet (s): O <strong>All</strong>ah! Dont make a<br />

dissolute or an unbeliever have a chance of getting my kindness! For I have among what<br />

has been revealed to me this verse: (You shall not find a people who believe in <strong>All</strong>ah and<br />

the latter day befriending those who act in opposition to <strong>All</strong>ah and His Messenger, even<br />

though they were their (own) fathers, or their sons, or their brothers, or their kinsfolk;<br />

these are they into whose hearts He has impressed faith.)[223] The author of<br />

Majmaul Bayan said: It means that loving the unbelievers and faith wont be<br />

together in ones heart.[224] 2. (O you who believe! do not take My enemy and your<br />

enemy for friends: would you offer them love while they deny what has come to you of<br />

the truth) 60:1. In this verse <strong>All</strong>ah had forbidden the believers from taking the unbelievers<br />

as friends, loving them, supporting them or asking them for support. 3. (O you who<br />

believe! do not take your fathers and your brothers for guardians if they love unbelief<br />

more than belief; and whoever of you takes them for a guardian, these it is that are the<br />

unjust Say: If your fathers and your sons and your brethren and your mates and your<br />

kinsfolk and property which you have acquired, and the slackness of trade which you fear<br />

and dwellings which you like, are dearer to you than <strong>All</strong>ah and His Messenger and striving<br />

in His way, then wait till <strong>All</strong>ah brings about His command: and <strong>All</strong>ah does not guide the<br />

transgressing people) 9:23-24. In these verses <strong>All</strong>ah had forbidden the believers from<br />

taking their fathers and brothers as guardians if they were unbelievers. Faith would be<br />

the cause of preventing the sentiment between the believer and the unbeliever even if<br />

the unbeliever was the believers father or brother, who were be the closest relatives of<br />

him. Then <strong>All</strong>ah said that loving the unbelievers or regarding them as guardians would<br />

bring the believer out of the sphere of faith and join him to the unjust people. Then <strong>All</strong>ah<br />

threatened the unbelievers of waiting for His punishment because they were not but<br />

transgressing people. Az-Zamakhshari when interpreting these verses mentioned that<br />

the Prophet (s) had said: No one of you become a faithful until he loves for the sake of<br />

<strong>All</strong>ah and hates for the sake of <strong>All</strong>ah; he loves the farthest one to him and hates the<br />

closest one to him for the sake of <strong>All</strong>ah.[225] This is a very severe verse or it may be<br />

the severest one that blames people for their leniency in the firm affairs of religion and<br />

for their confusion in the strict way of faithfulnesslet the most pious men try<br />

themselves, will they find that they are strict in obeying the obligations of <strong>All</strong>ah, will they<br />

prefer the religion of <strong>All</strong>ah to their fathers and children?[226] The author of
