Philip was asked to return to fix what had gone wrong, and Louie Native recognises the crucial role that Philip Yam played in successful Indigenous residence at the station: That‟s why I‟m saying, if he‟s not up there, it doesn‟t work that way, you know, properly. He‟s got to be there because he know how to work things properly, how to set things up. Louie Native The presence of key individuals at Oriners, particularly Philip Yam, was crucial to the successful growth of the homestead during the 1990s. Identifying people who can play similar roles in the future of the station will be vital to the future plans. Conversations with Philip Yam about Kowanyama Aboriginal Council support and resourcing for wet season logistics showed how this was significant to people living there, particularly policies and resourcing around use of helicopters: Philip Yam: We had to get out of there [Oriners] because council said there was a cyclone coming on the east coast there, and it was coming inland, so that had to fly us all out of there and bring us back here. Marcus Barber: I would have thought you were safer up there weren‟t you, because isn‟t that in the high country and that house is strong? Why did they want you back here? Philip Yam: I don‟t know, it was just a council idea. We didn‟t feel like moving. Marcus Barber: You were ok up there? Philip Yam: Yeah. We was saying „ooh, I don‟t think a cyclone going to hit us up here‟. Marcus Barber: But they made you come back? Philip Yam: Yeah, they made us all come back, and nobody been out there then. They ended up flying me back out again. Just nearly wet was over then. We had to come back and stay here for a while. Marcus Barber: Do you remember what year that was? Was Viv here then? 29 Philip Yam: I can‟t remember what year. I think they only flew one or two of us back out On another occasion, the chopper was required for an emergency but Philip remained, spending 3 months at the station on his own. However the chopper was again used to relieve him before the roads were negotiable: Philip Yam: I was there on my own once. I had a friend named Dave. He got very sick and we flew him out, back here. I had to stay there 3 months on my own, until the road was dried out a bit, then they flew me back out again. [They] got the chopper in and got me out, then they sent a couple of more blokes up there while I was in here [at Kowanyama]. I had to come back and see him. Marcus Barber: You spent 3 months up there alone. Was it good or was it lonely? Philip Yam: It was lonely. I had these two dogs up there with me too. Marcus Barber: What did you do? Was it really raining? Philip Yam: The river was up, you couldn‟t go nowhere. I couldn‟t go anywhere on me own, because I didn‟t want to go anywhere. I might get bitten by snake, because you get taipans up on that country too. Marcus Barber: So you just stayed around the homestead? Philip Yam: Yeah. I just stayed around. [I‟d] go down to the shed, muck around, making gates. If I wanted to go fishing, I‟d just go fishing there, right at the waterhole, because it was easy to get. Difficulties in resourcing helicopters, and in the adequate monitoring of communications back at Kowanyama, are two of the reasons regularly cited for the difficulties Oriners experienced in the early 2000s. As was noted in section 1, the rapid increase in competition for available resources from other outstations closer to Kowanyama during this period was also a significant factor in providing support to people staying there. That lack of residence has in turn led to neglect of and damage to key infrastructure, including the erosion of the airstrip, theft of the solar system and other important fittings from the house, and damage to the large equipment shed. 29 Viv Sinnamon later confirmed that he was not living in Kowanyama at this time.
