community interventions aimed at dispelling myths, and raising awareness of sources of support
and treatment.
However, caution is needed in interpreting and acting on these findings, as the response rate to
this study was very low (3% from the clinic population approached), and the eventual number of
women interviewed was small. Whilst in-depth interviews with small samples can provide
elaborate data of theoretical interest, there can be certainly no claims made about the
generalizability of the findings reported here, and further research is needed. Nonetheless, the
present study is valuable in revealing some specific cultural factors that might influence
adjustment in the British South Asian vitiligo population and additionally in demonstrating the
complex relationship that exists between these cultural issues and other social and
psychological factors, most notably visibility and social support.
