ONE great advantage in the pursuit of entomology is, that<br />

no day in the year is, at least no day need be, a 'dies non;'<br />

there is always something to be met with, even in the depth<br />

of winter, "something to please, and something to instruct."<br />

The summer, however, is the hey-day of the butterfly's exis­<br />

tence; for even though some of them, of several species, live<br />

throughout the winter in a dormant state, appearing again in<br />

early spring, when some hot day calls them forth from their<br />

retreat to renewed life, yet it is the former season to which,<br />

even to a proverb, they belong.<br />

This is a very common British species, and is widely dis­<br />

tributed, occurring in lanes and meadows.<br />

It appears about the middle of July.<br />

The caterpillar is to be found in the beginning of June.<br />

It feeds on the Poa annua, or annual meadow grass, and<br />

also, according to Haworth, on the Hieracium pilosella.<br />

The wings expand to the width of from one inch and a<br />

half to an inch and three quarters. Their ground-colour on the
