THE British Butterflies are to be sought in various localities<br />

—the "Highways and Byways" of the country. Few of the<br />

latter will be found to exceed in the graces of quiet retirement<br />

the district of Yorkshire, presently mentioned, as one of the<br />

"habitats" of the present species.<br />

This insect, formerly esteemed so rare, occurs in great pro­<br />

fusion in the neighbourhood of Jardine Hall, Dumfriesshire, as<br />

I have been informed by Mrs. Hugh E. Strickland, and her<br />

sister, Miss Jardine. It is extensively distributed likewise in<br />

other parts of that county; also in the Isle of Arran; near<br />

Minto, in Roxburghshire, and about Edinburgh, and doubtless<br />

in most of the southern counties of Scotland. In Yorkshire a<br />

few have been captured at the foot of Whernside, in Craven;<br />

and Mr. ALUs tells me that it is to be found in plenty near<br />

Grassington, in Wharfedale, also in Craven, on most of the<br />

hills and mountains of which district I fully expect that it will<br />

be discovered. It exists in profusion in one or two places not<br />

far from Newcastle, in Northumberland, and likewise in Castle<br />

Eden Dene, in the county of Durham, a sweet spot, well worth<br />

visiting for its own sake.<br />

The Scotch Argus varies in the expanse of its wings from<br />

an uv-h. and a half to two inches. The upper side is of a
