eyed spot, then a waved row of the like, then a partial white<br />

streak, then a row of black spots, shaded off on the edges,<br />

followed successively by an orange band, a row of small black<br />

dots, an interrupted white line, a narrow black line, and a<br />

greyish white fringe. The hind wings haAe much the same<br />

markings, but there are several spots over their inner portion,<br />

and there is a row of bright metallic green streaks along the<br />

outside of the orange band.<br />

The caterpillar is described as being "of a dull green colour,<br />

with whitish tubercles, and a blackish head and legs, a line<br />

down the back and sides, and oblique marks on the latter of a<br />

dark red colour bordered with white."<br />

The chrysalis is said to be at first green, and afterwards<br />

brown.<br />

A variety of this species, described as a separate one under<br />

the name of 'Polyommatus alcippe,' has "the wings narrower,<br />

blue above, with a broad black margin to all the wings, the<br />

under side of the male of a deep greyish or drab colour; the<br />

ocelli very distinct in the female, and the oblique series on the<br />

posterior wing consisting of four."<br />

In another, taken by the late Mr. Haworth, and named by<br />

him 'Polyommatus maritimus,' "the ocelli on the disc of the<br />

under side of the wings are elongated into those on the middle<br />

of the wing, being almost confluent with the following row of<br />

spots."<br />

Another, taken by the late Mr. Hatchett, had the upper<br />

surface of all the wings of a pale ful\'ous taAvny-colour.
