THIS is a very rare Butterfly, and has hitherto only been<br />

captured in the Isle of Arran, on the coast of Scotland.<br />

Sir Patrick Walker, and Alexander Macleay, Esq., captured<br />

specimens there. Those taken by the former gentleman, two<br />

or three in number, were met with near Brodrick Castle,<br />

and shewn by him to J. C. Dale, Esq. Many more will, I<br />

hope, yet be taken. "Floreat Entomologia."<br />

The expanse of the wings in this species is from a little<br />

under to about two inches. They are all of a rich dark brown<br />

colour, and the fore wings have a broad oblong patch of red<br />

near the outer margin, within which are four black eyes, the<br />

two nearest the tip being confluent. Their fringe is alternately<br />

brown and white. The hind wings have the like broad oblong<br />

patch of red, and in it three black eyes. Their fringe also is<br />

alternately brown and white.<br />

Underneath, the brown of the wings is of a paler colour, and<br />

in the fore wings the band is of a brighter hue. In the hind<br />

wins it is almost obsolete, but beyond the middle is an irreg-
