How well one remembers the "Long time ago," AA'ith which<br />

so trivial a thing as the capture of an insect, even though of<br />

no great rarity, is associated. The Browri Hairstreak I first<br />

and indeed for the only time captured on one of two little hills<br />

with an unpleasing designation in the neighbourhood of Wal-<br />

lingford, Berkshire. Barnwell, Ashton Wold, and the neigh­<br />

bourhood of Polebrook, Northamptonshire; near Great Bedwyn<br />

and Sarum, Wiltshire; Coombe Wood, Birch Wood, Darenth<br />

Wood, and Hornsey Wood, near London; Raydon Wood,<br />

near Ipswich, Suffolk; Dartmoor, in Devonshire; and places in<br />

Dorsetshire and Norfolk are also given as localities for it.<br />

It is by no means a plentiful species, though Avidely dis­<br />

tributed.<br />

About the end of August or the first Aveek in September the<br />

Brown Hairstreak is to be taken flying about oak and beech<br />

trees.<br />

The caterpillar occurs at the end of May.<br />

It feeds on the blackthorn, birch, plum, etc.<br />

In this species the Avings extend in width from one inch and<br />

a third, to rather more than one and a half. They are of a<br />

rich glossy brown colour, Avith a short oblong mark near the<br />

middle of the front, outside Avhich is a more or less visible
