THE Dark Green Fritillary frequents heaths, woods, meadows,<br />

and downs.<br />

Broadway, near Osberton, Nottinghamshire; Sywell Wood,<br />

near Northampton, Barnwell, and Ashton Wold, and the<br />

neighbourhood of Polebrook, Northamptonshire; the Downs<br />

near Arundel, various parts of Suffolk; Hainault Forest, and<br />

other places in Essex; near Great Bedwyn and Sarum, Wilt­<br />

shire; the woods on the banks of the River Dart, in Devonshire,<br />

are localities for this handsome insect, but it occurs not uncom­<br />

monly in a great many other counties throughout England,<br />

from Hampshire to Scotland, and even in the Isle of Arran,<br />

"both inclusive."<br />

The perfect insect appears in July, and continues till August.<br />

The caterpillar feeds on the dog violet, (Viola canina.J<br />

This species expands like the last to the width of from two<br />

inches and a quarter to a little over. The ground colour is<br />

of a rather pale but fine fulvous, marked over with numerous<br />

black billets, a row of round spots, another of crescents,<br />

followed by the margin, two narrow lines running through a<br />

row of black spots, both intersected diagonally by the black<br />

veins of the wings; the base is dusky—the outside edge<br />

nearly straight; the hinder wings are marked in a very similar<br />

manner, the whole of the base dusky.<br />
