THIS most elegant and graceful species is of decidedly local<br />

distribution, though in several places it occurs in tolerable<br />

plenty—"the Happy hunting grounds" of the Entomologist. It<br />

is found in shady places in the retired depths of woods, where<br />

the sun gleams through at intervals. It is fond of alighting<br />

on the bramble blossom, the nectar of which it sips. R. B.<br />

Postans, Esq. informs me that it is taken in the greatest<br />

abundance in Hartley Wood, near St. Osyth, Essex; and<br />

also, though more sparingly, near Colchester and Dedham, in<br />

the same county. It is also found near Rye, Sussex; in Coombe<br />

Wood, near London; in a wood near Parley Heath, and the<br />

New Forest, Hampshire; near Peterborough, Northampton, and<br />

I believe at or near Lilford, in the same county; Ipswich, Suf­<br />

folk; Enborne Copse, near Newbury, Berkshire; in Birch Wood,<br />

Kent* abundantly in woods near Winchester; near Finchley,<br />

Middlesex • and one specimen of late years in the Isle of Wight,<br />

where M. A. Bromfield, Esq. says that it used to be common<br />

in the woods near Ryde.<br />

This Butterfly appears the second week in July.<br />

The caterpillar feeds on the honeysuckle.<br />

The expanse of the wings is from tw r o inches and a quarter<br />

to two inches and a half; the upper surface of the fore wings<br />

is dull brownish black, with a curved band of interrupted
