To see this pretty insect gaily flitting about in the open<br />

places in Avoods in the new summer time, when every trace<br />

of winter has at last disappeared, is almost enough to make<br />

one wish to be, as well as to sing "I'd be a butterfly," so<br />

happy and joyous does it seem.<br />

It is very plentiful in many places; among others, at<br />

Buttercrambe Moor, near Stamford-Bridge, Yorkshire; near<br />

Great BedAvyn and Sarum, Wiltshire; and in great abundance<br />

in all the woods near Shelly, Stoke-by-Nayland, Suffolk; and<br />

Birch Wood, in Kent. It is also abundant in various parts<br />

of Scotland.<br />

It is found in Avoods.<br />

There are two broods of this butterfly, the first appearing<br />

the end of May and beginning of June, and the second in<br />

August and September.<br />

The caterpillar feeds on the wild violet, ( Viola canina,)<br />

and other species of that genus.<br />

In this insect, Avhich measures from one inch and three<br />

quarters to nearly two inches across the Avings, the upper side<br />

is fulvous, mottled over with several large black billets on<br />

the centre of the wings, placed in a zigzag manner, the inner<br />

series running across the Aving in a connected manner, followed<br />

by two other sets, Avhich only extend half-way across from the<br />

front edge; the base of the wings is blackish brown, much
