THIS is a very local species, though where it does occur it<br />

is found in abundance.<br />

Sywell Wood, near Northampton, Milton, Rockingham Forest,<br />

Monks Wood, and Castor Haglands W r ood, near Peterborough,<br />

Barnwell, Ashton Wold, and the neighbourhood of Polebrook,<br />

Northamptonshire; White Wood and Gamlingay, Cambridge­<br />

shire; near Dartmoor, Devonshire; Clapham Park Wood and<br />

Luton, Bedfordshire, are localities for it. I have heard that<br />

in one of these places the "Lord of the Manor" has forbid the<br />

"free Avarren" and "free entry" of the entomologist, but I will<br />

not believe that any such interference with the "liberty of<br />

the subject" has been perpetrated.<br />

The end of May or beginning of June is the time when the<br />

Spotted Skipper first appears, and in July it is still to be seen.<br />

The caterpillar feeds on the greater plantain, (Plantago<br />

major,) and the crested dog's-tail grass, (Cynosurus cristatus.)<br />

This Skipper is about an inch and a quarter in the expansion
