HAPPY in all its aspects is "Rural life in England," and<br />

not the least so when the love of Natural History gives a<br />

zest to every Avalk and ride, and invites you moreover into<br />

calm and peaceful scenes, Avhere, for the most part, the beauties<br />

of nature are seen to the greatest advantage.<br />

I have captured this pretty species in numbers at High<br />

Melton Wood, near Doncaster. It is rather difficult to procure<br />

it at a sufficiently low elevation. It has also been obtained at<br />

Barnwell and Ashton Wold, and the neighbourhood of Pole-<br />

brook, Northamptonshire; near Windsor, in Berkshire; IpsAvich<br />

and Bungay, in Suffolk; Allesley, in Warwickshire; Southgate,<br />

in Middlesex; and in Cambridgeshire; also in the vicinity<br />

of Ripley, in Surrey, Avhere it Avas observed by Mr. Stephens<br />

in myriads in the year 1827. It is partial to the bramble<br />

blossom.<br />

The fly occurs in July.<br />

It is said to feed on the elm and the blackthorn.<br />

The Avings expand to the Avidth of from a little under an<br />

inch and a quarter to nearly an inch and a half. The fore<br />

Avings are of a uniform dark blackish broAvn. The hind vvings<br />

are of the same dark ground colour, with a minute white
