brown colour, much marked all over with black marks, several<br />

near the centre, the base blackish broAvn, and a row near the<br />

outside edge, followed by a line, which is again succeeded by<br />

another line, through both of which a series of oblong marks<br />

cross to the margin, which is yellowish Avhite. The hinder<br />

wings are also reddish brown, the base being nearly black, and<br />

the marks disposed much in the same way as on the fore<br />

wings, except that the inner line is Avaved from each cross<br />

mark to the other.<br />

Underneath, the fore wings sheAv the central dark marks<br />

through, and a few of the others; the upper corner and part<br />

of the outer edge is paler than the rest. The hind wings<br />

are of a brownish purple colour, relieved Avith darker markings<br />

of the same; there are six or seven small silvery spots, inter­<br />

mingled Avith minute yellowish dots, at the base, a broad<br />

irregular band of the same nearly across the Avings, then a<br />

purple white streak, in which is a series of circular spots,<br />

indistinctly eyed, and the margins also silver in indentations.<br />

The caterpillar is described as being black, Avith the spines<br />

white and reddish, the back greyish, with a line along it.<br />
