THE habits of this kindred species are similar to those of<br />

the next but one, and "a life in the woods for me," will be<br />

the exclamation of every lover of nature, who seeks it, or any<br />

other butterfly, in the calm and peaceful scenes where it is to<br />

be met with—the ridings and paths in woods, or their borders,<br />

sheltered lanes, etc.<br />

It is common in most parts of the country; near Falmouth<br />

it is in general scarce, but was plentiful in the year 1858, in<br />

a lane leading to Mr. Jago's farm, as W P. Cocks, Esq. writes<br />

me word.<br />

The perfect insect appears at the end of May, or beginning<br />

of June, and also at the end of July, or beginning of August.<br />

This species measures rather over an inch and a quarter across<br />

the wings. The fore wings are tawny orange, with a large<br />

black vein following the front edge, and an oblique bar near<br />

the middle, from the end of which the black veins diverge;<br />

the outer part is taAvny brown, tAvo spots detached from the<br />

orange near the tip, breaking the line of the latter; the mar­<br />

gin paler, edged inside Avith black. The hind wings are of<br />

the same general ground colours, with a Avaved bar of spots of<br />

a brighter tint than the rest.<br />

Underneath, the fore Avings are marked as above, but much
