THIS is a very fine species, though painted with no particu­<br />

larly gay colours: it is at the same time sufficiently common.<br />

I have seen this insect in the parishes of Bossall and<br />

Huttons Ambo, Yorkshire, and have taken it in a wood a few<br />

miles from Worcester, in which county it is tolerably plentiful.<br />

I also once procured the larva, and reared it to the perfect<br />

insect, at Charmouth, Dorsetshire. It is common in the neigh­<br />

bourhood of Feversham and Milstead, near Sittingbourne, Kent,<br />

where the Rev. Henry Hilton has taken it, and occurs at<br />

Barnwell and Ashton Wold, and the neighbourhood of Polebrook<br />

and Lilford, Northamptonshire. In the woods of Suffolk and<br />

Essex it is very plentiful, at least in those near Stoke Nayland<br />

and Colchester. It occurs also near Great Bedwyn and Sarum,<br />

Wiltshire; plentifully at Bradfield, Berkshire, where my second<br />

son, Reginald Frank Morris, has taken it in the caterpillar<br />

state; in the neighbourhood of London; and also at Ely, and<br />

other parts of Cambridgeshire; in Norfolk occasionally, as<br />

Mr. Robert Marris informs me; and, though rarely, in the<br />

woods on the banks of the River Dart, in Devonshire.<br />

In Scotland, it has been found as far north as Dunkeld, and<br />

in other places to the south of it.<br />

This butterfly comes out in the middle of July, but some<br />

individuals, hidden away probably in some sheltered corner,
