ONE single specimen of this American species has, as yet,<br />

been obtained in this country. It Avas taken bv the late Cap-<br />

tain Blomer—no relation of "Mrs. Bloomer,"—at Withybush,<br />

near HaverfordAvest, South Wales, in July or August, 1828.<br />

It Avas kept by him for some time as a variety of the Painted<br />

Lady, and subsequently presented to J. C. Dale, Esq., of Glan-<br />

ville's Wootton, Dorsetshire, in Avhose cabinet I have seen it.<br />

This fly appears periodically in abundance in its native<br />

country, Avhile in some seasons it is rare.<br />

The caterpillar is said to be found at the end of April, or<br />

the beginning of May; and at the end of July, or beginning<br />

of August, so that, if so, there are no doubt two broods in<br />

the year.<br />

It is variously said to feed on the Avild balsam, and the<br />

obtuse-leaved cudweed, ( Gnaphalium obtusifolium.J<br />

This insect measures about two inches and three quarters in<br />

the expanse of its wings, which are of a tawny orange and<br />

brown colour. The fore wings are broAvn at the base, and<br />

have several irregular blackish bars, and the tip blackish, with<br />

a long white spot; and four dots near the tip also white;
