Underneath, the Avings are similarly marked to those of the<br />

male, but the ground colour is very much darker, the spots<br />

much larger and more distinct, Avith white rims, and there are<br />

some orange marks Avithin the margin of the fore Avings, and<br />

a decided row of orange lunules within that of the hind ones.<br />

The caterpillar is green, with yellow lines on the sides and<br />

the back.<br />

Many varieties of this species have occurred, the eyes being<br />

more or less distinct, and the brown more or less diffused over<br />

the wings of the male.<br />

One, described as a species by Miss Jermyn, under the<br />

name of 'Polyommatus calaethys,' has the wings "above brown,<br />

with a blue disc and a whitish discoidal spot with a black<br />

pupil; beneath, the posterior wings have a discoidal, white,<br />

cinctured crescent, Avith a Avaved band of seven undulated spots<br />

toAvards the hinder margin."
