IN company, some years ago, with my friend J. C. Dale, Esq.,<br />

late High Sheriff of Dorset, I formerly captured this, then<br />

newly by him discovered insect, I mean as a British one, in<br />

plenty at Luhvorth Cove, Lulworth, Dorsetshire—a charming<br />

scene, where you will be fain to wish that you could for<br />

ever watch the glorious ocean, dashing up from its dark depth<br />

against the steep cliffs, which there present an aspect of the<br />

utmost seclusion and the most lonely retirement. Wild must<br />

all around be in Avinter, but this small butterfly rejoices in<br />

the settled summer, more fortunate than some of its class,<br />

who are tempted out to AVOO the "beautiful spring:" often<br />

their reception is cold and chilling, and their day-dream of<br />

happiness is blighted like the contemporary delicate flower<br />

that has peered out too soon from its sheltered nook, and<br />

must again hide its head for a season, till the skies are more<br />

propitious, and the sun shall shine undisturbed upon it.<br />

NOAV it is not to be seen there, though it is still to be<br />

found at the burning cliff, near Weymouth, where my friend<br />

the Rev. Francis Lockey, of SAvansAvick Cottage, near Bath,<br />

has taken it in plenty; Mr. Humphreys, also, at Shenston, near<br />

Lichfield.<br />

In this small species the expansion of the wings is about an
