2 .7 .1 Overview of<br />

recent drug trends<br />

The dom<strong>in</strong>ant drug of choice is hero<strong>in</strong> . However,<br />

many drug <strong>use</strong>rs consume cannabis,<br />

methamphetam<strong>in</strong>e, ketam<strong>in</strong>e, coca<strong>in</strong>e and<br />

various o<strong>the</strong>r pills, usually amphetam<strong>in</strong>etype<br />

substances — ma<strong>in</strong>ly ecstasy, MDMA<br />

and a variety of sedatives . Statistics <strong>in</strong>dicate<br />

that hero<strong>in</strong> <strong>use</strong> has been decl<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />

recent years .<br />

2 .7 .2 Prevalence of drug <strong>use</strong><br />

In 2003, 634 drug <strong>use</strong>rs were registered with<br />

<strong>the</strong> authorities, an <strong>in</strong>crease of 18 per cent<br />

compared to 2002 . No formal estimates<br />

exist of overall numbers of drug <strong>use</strong>rs, but<br />

a recent study suggested <strong>the</strong>re were about<br />

3700 hero<strong>in</strong> <strong>use</strong>rs, or 0 .87 per cent of <strong>the</strong><br />

population . There may be as many as 900<br />

<strong>in</strong>ject<strong>in</strong>g drug <strong>use</strong>rs (IDUs), but this is likely<br />

to be an under-estimate consider<strong>in</strong>g that<br />

most hero<strong>in</strong> <strong>use</strong>rs are <strong>in</strong>jectors .<br />

There is no evidence to <strong>in</strong>dicate that Macao<br />

is a drug-produc<strong>in</strong>g country . Ma<strong>in</strong> sources<br />

of illegal drugs enter<strong>in</strong>g Macao are ma<strong>in</strong>land<br />

Ch<strong>in</strong>a, Hong Kong and o<strong>the</strong>r parts of Sou<strong>the</strong>ast<br />

<strong>Asia</strong> . Most narcotics orig<strong>in</strong>ate from <strong>the</strong><br />

Golden Triangle . Adolescent drug <strong>use</strong>rs are<br />

cross<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to ma<strong>in</strong>land Ch<strong>in</strong>a, particularly<br />

Guangdong Prov<strong>in</strong>ce, for drug traffick<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and consumption .<br />

2 .7 .4 <strong>Drug</strong>-tak<strong>in</strong>g practices,<br />

risk factors and trends<br />

The favoured method of adm<strong>in</strong>ister<strong>in</strong>g hero<strong>in</strong><br />

is <strong>in</strong>ject<strong>in</strong>g, followed by fume <strong>in</strong>halation .<br />

Ketam<strong>in</strong>e and ecstasy are usually <strong>in</strong>gested<br />

and most dr<strong>in</strong>k alcohol with <strong>the</strong>se drugs .<br />

The shar<strong>in</strong>g of needles among IDUs is common<br />

practice: most have difficulty access<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong>ject<strong>in</strong>g equipment at night when stores<br />

and pharmacies are closed . In 2001, <strong>the</strong>re<br />

were 13 HIV cases among IDUs, 5 per cent<br />

of <strong>the</strong> total . In 2004, <strong>the</strong>re were 18 HIV<br />

cases among IDUs, 60 per cent of <strong>the</strong> total .<br />

This significant proportion among this group<br />

of people has become a matter of concern<br />

for public health authorities . Hepatitis C<br />

prevalence among IDUs has been reported<br />

at 69 per cent and hepatitis B <strong>in</strong>fection at<br />

13 per cent . Information about sexual risk<br />

behaviours was not available .<br />
