is fringed with 30-40 fine cirri, one half of which are stronger<br />

and longer than the intermediate cirri and fimbriated on each<br />

side ; the terminal cirri of the excretal tube are shorter and<br />

equal ; tubular sheath covered with a brown : epidermis gills<br />

narrow, pale drab : palps very large, triangular, pointed, of a<br />

thin membranous texture, pale brown elegantly speckled with<br />

minute red-brown : points foot large, fleshy, and white with a<br />

tinge of pale brown.<br />

Shell scimitar- shaped, smaller than that of L. elliptic^,<br />

much broader with respect to its length, more convex, cylin-<br />

drical, and solid, upturned at the posterior end, which is<br />

rounded ; the anterior side is considerably shorter in propor-<br />

tion ;<br />

the cardinal tooth on the anterior side in the right valve<br />

is double, and there is no posterior lateral in either Talve.<br />

Habitat : In similar situations, but not so generally<br />

Channel Isles, and has been taken on the coasts of<br />

Dorset, Devon, Cornwall, and Ireland. It is said that<br />

the late Mr. Lyons found it in Pembrokeshire ; and Mr.<br />

Maclaurin included it in his list of shells from Cold-<br />

ingham Bay, Berwickshire. Belfast " alluvial" deposit<br />

(Hyndman and Grainger); Sussex tertiaries (Godwin-<br />

Austen); Coralline Crag (coll. S. Wood in Brit. Mus.);<br />

Subapennine strata (Brocchi) ; Monte Mario near Rome<br />

(Lamarck) ; Sicily (Philippi). It has not been noticed<br />

anywhere north of Great Britain ; but its distribution<br />

southwards extends from Normandy to Lisbon, Nice,<br />

and Algeria, its depth ranging from low-water mark to<br />

12 fathoms.<br />

Although this species comes very near the last, my<br />

iconoclastic propensities are not strong enough to unite<br />

them at present. If their form is variable, and not to<br />

be relied upon as a mark of distinction, the dentition of<br />

each is somewhat different. I am not aware whether
