Chief Directorate: Administration, General Provincial Services Branch, Natal Provincial<br />

Administration, Private Bag X9037, Pietermaritzburg, 3200, is responsible for the overall<br />

co-ordination <strong>of</strong> civil protection on a province-wide basis (excluding KwaZulul. A<br />

comprehensive disaster contingency plan for Natal has been prepared by the<br />

Directorate*. Local authorities however, are responsible for day-to-day civil protection<br />

duties. (Contactthe Chief Civil Protection Officer <strong>of</strong> the nearest local authority for specific<br />

details). There are 129 civil protection organizations (including municipalities) in Natal<br />

(Table J451. In KwaZulu, township councils are the relevant local authority in terms <strong>of</strong> the<br />

KwaZulu Civil Defence Act No. 11 <strong>of</strong> 1984. In areas outside these townships, the<br />

magistrate <strong>of</strong> the district concerned is the local authority.<br />

A disaster management co-ordinating centre involving several agencies was recently established for<br />

Natal/KwaZulu as a unified region. The purpose <strong>of</strong>the centre is to plan and co-ordinate all major relief<br />
