Road and Umlazi (Durban); Pinetown (Pinetown); Enyenyezi and Port Shepstone (Port<br />

Shepstone); Richards Bay (Richards Bay); Nongoma (Nongoma); Ezakheni and ladysmith<br />

(ladysmith); Madadeni, Newcastle and St Oswald's (Newcastle); Edendale, KwaZulu-Natal<br />

Midlands, Msunduzi, Northdale and Plessislaer (Pietermaritzburg), and Vryheid (Vryheid).<br />

The more formal agricultural/forestrylindustrial training institutions which <strong>of</strong>fer courses<br />

including those <strong>of</strong> some relevance to water and sanitation are: Africa Enterprise; the<br />

Baynesfield Training Centre; Forestry Training Services (formerly Timber Industry<br />

Manpower Services); the KwaZulu Training Trust; the Midlands Community College; the<br />

Mjindi Farming Training Centre; the Mkondeni Training Centre, and the Natal Training<br />

Centre. A feature <strong>of</strong> the courses presented by certain training institutions such as the<br />

Baynesfield Training Centre, is the GM course. The purpose <strong>of</strong> the GM (manpower,<br />

management money, machinery, materials and markets) course isto provide trainees with<br />

some background to the functioning <strong>of</strong> a modern economy. The GM course - while not<br />

specifically related to water issues - serves as a valuable introduction which has<br />

widespread management implications.<br />

Some 25 other agencies undertake general development-work training, sometimes with<br />

special reference to water and sanitation (such as spring protection). Government<br />

departments involved with water and sanitation training include the Community Services<br />

Branch <strong>of</strong> the Natal Provincial Administration; the Department <strong>of</strong> National Health and<br />

Population Development; the l
