FOREWORD
This thesis is organized in four successive parts accordingly to a
logical progression in the scientific approach. Published or submitted
papers constitute the body of each section. Some supplemental material is
added when further exploration was made after the publication of the
papers.
In this document, results of some statistical tests are presented inline in
an abridged form, like: Student test, p < 0.001. Current tendency –at least
in international journals– is to favor a more detailed presentation, e.g.,
Student test, t = 3.858, df = 84, p < 0.001. We believe it does not bring
additional vital information, but it just surcharges text. A small table
summarizes much better statistical results where required.
Also I actively participated in scientific works that are marginal to the
main body of the present thesis. These works are shortly presented
(abstract of publications) as annexes (see Annex III).
