Chief Characters Bertha, Heinrich, Cornelius (The Miser), Benjamin<br />

THE scene of this opera is laid in Nuremberg, where an old miser, Cornelius, a toy-shop owner,<br />

being un-able to obtain a sufficiently beautiful and virtuous wife for his very stupid son,<br />

Benjamin, has made a mechanical Doll, human size, which he hopes to endow with life by means<br />

of magic learned from the book of Dr Faustus the deed to be done some dark and stormy night.
