26. Promotional printers may store templates in their internal processor
memory, in which case only the variable data needs to be sent, including which
template to use, to print a voucher or coupon. Alternatively, template definitions
may be sent to the printer as part of a print request, along with the variable data.
Stored templates are typically used to print vouchers, because of their limited
variety. The dynamic template definition technique is well suited for printing
coupons, because of the wide variety of coupons. A cache of coupon template
definitions for a promotional campaign can be downloaded from a promotional
controller and temporarily stored in the printer processor's memory to streamline
coupon printing for the duration of the campaign,
27. With promotional coupon printing, casino operators can print
promotional coupons using the same printer that also prints the gaming vouchers.
These promotional coupons may be based on data received from the gaming
machine controller, as well as infonnation received from a promotional server on a
casino's gaining machine network.
28. Promotional coupon printers used in gaming machines are subject to
careful regulatory scrutiny by each government jurisdiction in which the printer is
sold, to assure an enor-free operation. (Eric Meyerhofer, telephone conversation).
Because obtaining regulatory approval is expensive and time consuming for printer
manufacturers, printer manufacturers may create software that can be compiled
flexibly for different printer products and that needs regulatory approval only once.
Therefore, while there may be numerous variations of the firmware as compiled,
they are based on the same source code compiled differently.
III. SUMMARY OF OPINIONS
29. Based on the documents and information I have reviewed, observation
of operation and structure of the exemplar products provided, as well as my
background, training, and experience, I have reached the following opinions:
