NURSING PRIORITY NO. 2.To assist family member to develop/<br />

strengthen potential for growth:<br />

• Provide time to talk with family to discuss their view of the<br />

situation.<br />

• Establish a relationship with family/client to foster trust/growth.<br />

• Provide a role model with which the family member may<br />

identify.<br />

• Discuss importance of open communication and of not having<br />

secrets.<br />

• Demonstrate techniques, such as active-listening, I-messages,<br />

and problem-solving, to facilitate effective communication.<br />

• Establish social goals of achieving and maintaining harmony<br />

with oneself, family, and community.<br />

NURSING PRIORITY NO.3.To promote wellness (Teaching/Discharge<br />

Considerations):<br />

• Assist family member to support the client in meeting own<br />

needs within ability and/or constraints of the illness/situation.<br />

• Provide experiences for the family to help them learn ways of<br />

assisting/supporting client.<br />

• Identify other individuals/groups with similar conditions<br />

(e.g., Reach for Recovery, CanSurmount, Al-Anon, MS Society)<br />

and assist client/family member to make contact. Provides<br />

ongoing support for sharing common experiences,<br />

problem solving, and learning new behaviors.<br />

• Assist family member to learn new, effective ways of dealing<br />

with feelings/reactions.<br />

• Encourage family member to pursue personal interests/<br />

hobbies/leisure activities to promote individual well-being<br />

and strengthen coping abilities.<br />
