causative factors (e.g., proper food preparation or avoidance<br />

of irritating foods).<br />

Actions/Interventions<br />

NURSING PRIORITY NO.1.To assess causative factors/etiology:<br />

• Ascertain onset and pattern of diarrhea, noting whether acute<br />

or chronic. Acute diarrhea (caused by viral/bacterial/parasitic<br />

infections [e.g. Norwalk, Rotovirus/Salmonella, Shigella/<br />

Giardia, Amebiasis, respectively]; bacterial food-borne toxins<br />

[e.g., Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli]; medications<br />

[e.g., antibiotics, chemotherapy agents, cholchicine,<br />
